Launched in 1996, the Marea models were essentially different body styles of Fiat's hatchback offerings, the Bravo and Brava . The Marea replaced the earlier Tipo -based Fiat Tempra . While the Fiat Stilo Multiwagon is the successor of the Marea Weekend, the Fiat Linea is scheduled to replace the saloon version in 2007. [ 2 ] Later the Marea also superseded the Tempra in Brazilian ( Betim ) and Turkish (in Bursa , with TofaÅŸ [ 3 ] ) plants, which make vehicles mostly for local and other developing markets. Fiat Marea Weekend In Europe, production and sales of the Marea ceased in 2002, a year after the Bravo and Brava were replaced with the Fiat Stilo . The Marea Weekend was replaced by the Stilo Multiwagon, while the saloon was dropped altogether due to relatively low popularity of compact saloon cars in Europe. Nevertheless, the Marea (in both body styles) is still manufactured in Turkey and Brazil for local (and other Latin American) markets. The Brazilian version was facelifted in 2001, when it gained a redesigned rear end with taillights taken from the Lancia Lybra . [ 4 ] [ 5 ] For 2006 the Marea was mildly revised again, gaining a new rear end, and a new grille, similar in style to other current Fiat models. [ 6 ] In mid-2007, Brazilian production of the Marea and Marea Weekend ceased; their successor, Fiat Linea, will be produced from mid-2008 on, although it is not sure if it will feature an estate version. [ edit ] Engines The Marea petrol and turbodiesel engines 1.2 L, 1.4 L, 1.6 L, 1.8 L and 2.0 L petrol and 1.9 L were sourced from the Brava and Bravo, and a 2.0 20v turbo option from the Fiat Coupé was also available. For a short time there was also a 2.4 turbodiesel available, dropped in 2001, which has become sought after. Due to Brazilian production taxes the 2.0 20v engine had its electronic fuel injection remapped to limit the engine power to 128 bhp (95 kW) in the Marea SX and ELX models of 1999. The engine retained its full power (142 bhp) on the more expensive Marea HLX model. Simply exchanging the SX or ELX fuel injection chip with the HLX chip would bring back the original engine power. Fiat initially claimed it to be untrue explaining that other modifications had been made in the SX/ELX models for cost-savings, but this was revealed to be false. In 2000 the 2.0 20v engine was replaced with the 2.4 20v (160 bhp) engine in the HLX model, and the SX model started using the 1.8 16v engine (130 bhp), while the ELX injection was mapped as it had originally been for the HLX to give the 2.0 20v engine the original engine power (141 bhp). Later the 2.0 20v engine was dropped and the 1.6 16v (105 bhp) engine was introduced; this engine was the only one produced for model year 2007, when the Marea production has been discontinued. All engines for the Fiat Marea in Brazil were petrol-based, with no diesel variants. Do you recognise it? Most wont and this represents something of a shame, not least for Fiat who have been trying to sell the Marea in the UK since 1997. Any Fiat larger than a Tipo has tended to be eyed with considerable suspicion by the UK car buying populace. Sure, the Italian company can make cheap and cheerful models, and with the Coupe can now build decent sporty cars, but we remain unconvinced about anything mid-sized or larger that hails from Turin. Its a suspicion that should have been laid to rest some time ago. This lack of confidence is also something that used buyers can exploit to their considerable advantage. The fact that the Marea has never really caught on in the UK means one sure thing. A current-era Fiat with 1970s era depreciation, or put another way, a virtually new car going for a song. Suddenly the Marea looks a whole lot more appealing. The Marea is a good looking, well equipped and tightly priced car. With its bulbous styling and unfortunate image, its tempting to dismiss the Marea as one of those tries too hard cars, but that would be doing it a disservice. Still, the perception of a big, friendly but slightly stupid dog lasts until the moment you get in. The Marea seems genuinely well-built and quietly competent. The dash materials, though unlikely to trouble Audis buyers, are a long way from the cheap, rattling yoghurt-pot standards that Fiats of yore displayed. Post 1999 cars benefit from air conditioning, ABS, split fold rear seats and upgraded six-speaker CD-compatible stereos. The interiors were also perked up, a weak area of earlier cars. Instruments were also redesigned for added clarity and better upholstery and carpets are evident. Its a lot better than youd expect and is an interior to which some genuine thought has been given. This is perhaps not surprising, the re-style coming within months of the launch of the amazing Fiat Multipla, so some ideas must have been shared. All models in the range are duplicated in either Weekend (estate) or saloon body styles. Fiats custom of suffixing the engine size with approximate horsepower figures helps in identifying models. Of the petrol engined cars, theres the 1.6 100 in either SX or ELX trim, or the1.8 115 ELX. The 2. 0 155 cars are available in ELX or HLX trim designations. The diesel range is probably more interesting. Its best not to bother with the antiquated engine fitted to the entry model diesel, the Marea 1.9TD 75 SX, as its coarse and slow compared to the more modern units in the range. The 1.9TD 100 engine is available in SX and ELX designations, but its best to opt for the more high-tech direct injection motors. The entry level direct-injection is the Marea 1.9JTD 105 SX, and an ELX trim is also offered. Next up is the 2.4 TD 125 HLX, although this was replaced in March 1999 by the star engine of the range, the 2.4 JTD 130, available only in top HLX trim level. For those that suffer from a guilty conscience, buying a Marea may be a painful experience. After all, its easy to sympathise with the poor seller, having paid £16,890 for his Marea 2.4 TD125 HLX saloon in 1997. There it sits, low mileage, resplendent on its R plates, and you would be giving him £1,000 for it. For those who do suffer from guilt, it would pay to remember a saying that mentions something about gift horses and mouths. Mareas are wonderfully inexpensive used buys. Prices start just above £1,000 for a 1997 P registered 1.6 SX saloon. A similar vintage 1.8 ELX will cost £1,100. One of the perky Fiat Coupe-engined Marea 155 20v HLX cars will cost £2,100 on 2000 W plates. Insurance ratings range from Group 8 for the base 1. 6 SX through to Group 14 for the Marea 155. With so few Mareas around, choosiness may be a folly, but theres genuinely not too much to worry about. This is the Fiat that developed the Coupe and the Multipla; a long way on from the company that brought us the Croma and the Strada. When inspecting a Marea Weekend, check for damage to the load bay, as the loading area is not the squarest in its class, and may well incur damage from bulky items. Apart from this, the Marea has little to check for. Otherwise, the usual reminder to obtain a service history applies. (Estimated prices, based on a Marea 1.8ELX Saloon) Despite the regular pannings Fiat dealers receive in the Top Gear/JD Power reports, its good to know you wont have to pay too much to receive this service. Spares prices for the Marea are right there in the lower end of the class. A clutch assembly will cost in the region of £130, whilst a rear exhaust section will retail at around £195. Front brake pads are a trifling £35, while rear brake shoes are £49 a set. A new starter motor will set you back around £82, whilst a new alternator will see £100 vanish across the spares counter. Though it may share an engine with the Fiat Coupe, dont expect flat and hard cornering. The Marea is set up with a comfort bias and the more powerful engined models can seem slightly too gutsy for their own benefit. The flipside of this aspect is relaxed and composed cruising ability, a characteristic much valued by family buyers. The 2. 4JTD and 2.0 155 models are genuinely rapid and will surprise many a road user with their turn of speed and tractability, Weekend models especially. This estate is an appealing package, the high-level tail lights acting as an indicator of its modernity. Consumption on the JTD model is outstanding given its punchy performance. Expect 31.4 mpg on the urban cycle from a car which can sprint to 60mph in 10 seconds. Despite the many attributes of the JTD diesel-engined Marea, its also the model which holds its value best, which is bad news for used buyers. A more sensible choice is the 1.9TD 100, which combines acceptable performance with a miserly thirst. A 1998 Marea 1. 9TD 100 ELX Weekend is probably the pick of the range, offering a keenly priced used car with the worst of the models depreciation having already been swallowed by the previous keeper. The Marea is a long way from being at the top of most buyers shopping lists, and this can work to your favour. First youll have to find one though.
