The MultiJet name is used in the second generation JTD common rail units. Most of the Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Lancia range has JTD engines. Ownership of some Fiat JTD designs is shared with General Motors as part of a settlement of the failed merger between the two auto conglomerates. GM Powertrain Europe group in Turin, Italy manages their interest in these engines. Some PSA Peugeot Citroën diesel engines are also rebadged as JTD. A new generation JTD engine, Multijet II was introduced in Fiat Punto Evo in 2009. The Multijet 75 PS version was chosen in 2005 as the International Engine of the Year in the 1-litre to 1.4-litre category. There are four versions of this engine: a 70 PS (51 kW; 69 hp), a 75 PS (55 kW; 74 hp) (used in the Fiat Punto, Panda, Palio / Albea, Fiat Idea, Opel Corsa / Combo, Opel Meriva and Suzuki Swift), a variable inlet geometry 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp) (used in the new Fiat Grande Punto, Fiat Linea, Opel Corsa, Opel Astra and Alfa Romeo MiTo), and a 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp) is available to Lancia Ypsilon. At the time of the launch this was the smallest four-cylinder diesel engine available and has a fuel consumption of 3.3 L/100 km (86 mpg-imp; 71 mpg-US) in some applications. The engine is able to meet Euro IV pollution standards without the use of a diesel particulate filter. In January 2008 Tata Motors introduced new Indica Vista model, which features new QuadraJet branded version of this engine.[1] The second generation Ford Ka uses 1.3 Multijet named as Duratorq TDCi . During 2009 Fiat launched a new generation badged Multijet 2, with a new injection management system (up to 8 injections per cycle, instead of 5) and able to meet Euro V pollution standards. The first car that used this engine was Alfa Romeo 156 in 1997 (105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp)), making it the world's first common-rail Diesel passenger car. In 1999 it was introduced with the Fiat Punto and Fiat Brava/Fiat Bravo/Fiat Marea. The engine block weighs approximately 125 kg (276 lb). The Multijet second generation features a common-rail design and is available with five different power outputs. The 8-valve version has 100 PS (74 kW; 99 hp), 120 PS (88 kW; 120 hp) or 130 PS (96 kW; 130 hp), the last two with variable geometry turbocharger; and the 16-valve version has 150 PS (110 kW; 150 hp) or 170 PS (130 kW; 170 hp). Opel also uses a version of this engine. Their CDTI engine, manufactured in Pratola Serra, Italy and Kaiserslautern, Germany, is the product of the half-decade joint venture between GM and Fiat. Fiat Powertrain Technologies released information about new twin stage turbo (twin turbo) version of this engine in summer 2007, engine is available with two power levels, first one is producing 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) and second one 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp), both have a maximum torque output of 400 N·m (295 lb·ft) at 2000 rpm. 180 PS version production started summer 2007. The engine weighs approximately 185 kilograms (410 lb). This engine will be sold both to Fiat Group Automobiles and other brands, but the 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp) version is reserved only to Fiat Group Automobiles.[4] Applications: Cadillac BLS Lancia Delta Saab 9-3 [edit] 2.0 A new 2 litre (1956 cc) Multijet diesel was introduced in third generation Lancia Delta in summer 2008. At its first version this engine produces 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp). For 2009 the engine was fitted to Alfa Romeo 159 as 170 PS (125 kW; 168 hp) variant. Fiat Sedici and the new Fiat Doblò generation use a 135 PS (99 kW; 133 hp) variant of this engine. The Twin Turbo version, with 190 PS (140 kW; 190 bhp), will be produced for Opel for the Insignia. The same engines will also be available in the 2011 Saab 9-5, which shares its powertrains with the Insignia. Applications: Fiat Scudo Fiat Ulysse Lancia Phedra [edit] 2.3 The 2.3 Multijet (2287 cc) was developed by Iveco and is available in two versions 120 MultiJet (Sofim FI AE048ID) and 130 MultiJet (Sofim FI AE048IN 2287), these engines produces 116 PS (85 kW) and 127 PS (93 kW). The 2.4 L (2387 cc) straight-5 version is based on the 2.4 124 PS (91 kW; 122 hp) 5 cylinder TD engine as used in the Mk1 Fiat Marea and the Mk1 Lancia Kappa. The JTD version benefits from the solid build of the TD block, and an improved head/injection system. There are 2 versions of the 2.4 JTD, the 10-valve as used in the Fiat Marea 130 JTD and the earlier Alfa Romeo 156 diesels where it was available as 136 PS (100 kW; 134 hp),140 PS (103 kW; 138 hp), 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) and later a Multijet 20-valve version 175 PS (129 kW; 173 hp) as used in the later (2003>) Alfa Romeo 156 as well as some Lancia vehicles. It was designed for transverse front-wheel drive use and was deemed too long and tall for widespread use in other GM or Fiat products. A newer Multijet variant of this engine, capable for 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp), is currently used in the Alfa Romeo 159, Alfa Romeo Brera and Fiat Croma. The 160 MultiJet Power, introduced in 2007, saw displacement increased to 3.0 L (2998 cc). This engine produces 157 PS (115 kW) in Fiat-badged models. Right there is plenty about this on the Forum but really.... Do we have ALL the symptoms in a single place to make it easy as pie for owners to get all the info they need to judge wether or not to remove / clean & re-fit? As opposed to a dodgy MAF or TPS for example? To give the best chance of getting it right... I've attached a couple of pics of mine below, there are others, but just so they are "here"! Now what owners of the 1.9 JTD derived MJet want to know is how do they know for sure what the EGR clog=up signs are?... what different symptoms did we have? Mine... NO power up to 2,200 RPM then whooosha! Black smoke over 3,000RPM. Drop in economy by 5 - 6 MPG. A brief showing of the EML & "Check Engine" message. Heavy judder from the engine when seitched off. Add your own symptoms. Attached are my 2 pics... suffice it to say it was totally clogged up, easy to clean as per Aircooled doodlebug's guide, removing & re-fitting would always be a pain in the a$$ with my big hands & short fingers so I had a new EGR fitted, I now have a cleaned up example ready for use! Be aware that there's 2 side venturi to clean out as well... easily missed at the opposite end from my 1st pic, I cleaned these out with a plastic cable tie... repeatedly until no soot came out by flushing & brushing! This went on for about a month or so then one day the flat spot increase on the way to work spanning from around 1800rpm to 2100rpm but appeared normal above and below these revs so I got it booked into Fiat to be checked out. The following day I got out of my road and then it felt very unresponsive at any revs below 2500rpm and then it would surge with power. I got about a mile down the road and stopped at the lights, went to pull away and it was pretty much undrivable. I managed to limp it to the office and park up - Driving it through the gears managed a grand total of about 25mph in 6th gear. Once I switched the engine off that was it, I couldn't get it started again. It got recovered to the dealers where they diagnosed the EGR failure. Recon EGR valve fitted under warranty and all was good again. It varies, no-one is sure why, may be driving style / conditions, may be fuel quality, could be some of all the above. Mine went 62,000 miles, I have seen some Posts where they failed at 20,000 or less. Not sure about the DV TBH, not something I'd want to do, I prefer a silent sleeper! I did say for me at my age I'm not sure you'll get the turbo flutter because of the variable vane turbo but I know nothing of it OLZ soz. My sleeper takes all sorts completely by surprize... Not only is it expected to top the supermini class, but it has also been tasked with relaunching the entire Fiat brand. After the award-winning Panda and ungainly Croma estate, company bosses have high hopes for the pretty hatchback. Designed in association with Italian styling house Giugiaro, this is the first Fiat to wear a new family look which the forthcoming Stilo will share. It's the Grande Punto's shape, fun driving characteristics, strong diesel engines and improved build quality which Fiat believes will turn the firm's fortunes around. We drove the entry-level 75bhp 1.3-litre diesel model to judge for ourselves. After the unsuccessful mid-life facelift performed on the outgoing car, the Grande Punto represents a welcome return to form. The Seventies-style chrome grille and sleek headlights provide a distinctive, sporty appearance, while the trademark pillar-mounted rear lights - previewed on the original 1993 machine - create a clean, modern look. As its full name suggests, the transformation has seen the Punto put on some weight. It's 19cm longer than the old car, resulting in a roomy cabin, a decent boot and an expected class-topping Euro NCAP crash test rating. Inside, the dashboard is smart and the switchgear uncluttered. The height-adjustable seat and steering wheel help the driver find a comfortable position. Our entry-level car was fitted with only four seatbelts and rather dated ventilation dials, but higher-spec models come with digital climate control, five belts and up to seven airbags. On the rural Italian roads of our test route, the 75bhp diesel unit didn't feel as slow as its 13.6-second 0-62mph time suggests. In-gear performance is fine for an urban runaround, and fuel returns nearing 60mpg are impressive. Motorway speeds are also maintained comfortably, while the ride and refinement have been improved significantly. But there is noticeable body roll when pressing on, and the sensitive brake pedal lacks progression. However, the Punto is easy to drive thanks to its light clutch and smooth five-speed manual gearbox. We'll have to wait until we sample it on UK roads to deliver a final verdict, but our initial impressions are positive. The 1.3 oil-burner is available with either 75bhp or 90bhp, while a pair of 1.9-litre diesels - including a 130bhp option - are also offered. Petrol choices comprise 65bhp 1.2 and 77bhp 1.4-litre units. At the Grande Punto's launch, Fiat's claims about quality are of particular interest. Despite encouraging signs, the otherwise solid-feeling interior of our car was let down by an ill-fitting centre console cover. Doubts also remain over the below-par dealer network. Three and five-door models arrive next February. Prices are not expected to carry much of a premium over the current car, which will initially be sold alongside the newcomer as a budget option. The new range is likely to start from about ΂£7,600, making Fiat's 'mini Maserati' certainly worth a look.
