After 73k miles my EOBD light came on this afternoon and stayed on. Basically accelerated from lights, momentary loss of power and then seemed to pick back up, but EOBD light is now on. So a few quedstions,
Can it be read by most garages being EOBD, as my local Fiat garage will most probably not be able to look at it for at least a fortnight?
Does anyone know if there is a common trend of an item that fails?
Worst case scenario of cost, how much for an injector change etc.
I ask this due to the fact the car is due to be either kept or the contract bought out and sold on, so will not wanting further EOBD probs in the future. __________________ FIAT Forum Useful Links: Donate to FF | Buy FF Merchandise | Classifieds | FF Insurance | How-to Guides | FAQs 08-08-2010 #2 Trimdoner Get Your Own Title Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: County Durham Posts: 126 Thanks: 7 Trader Rating: 0 Re: MJ EOBD light. Anybody with a half-decent code reader should be able to read and reset the engine management light. The important things will be A: What the failure message was, and B: Will the light stay out again once it's reset! It may have come on just because of some transient fault that won't appear again if you're lucky __________________ FIAT Forum Useful Links: Donate to FF | Buy FF Merchandise | Classifieds | FF Insurance | How-to Guides | FAQs 08-08-2010 #3 fraguzz Get Your Own Title Join Date: Jul 2003 Location: Denmark. When my light came on I had just left a Fiat garage after the ABS recall took it straight back & it was the EGR valve they reset the fault code but it reocurred shortly after. I spoke to the service manager at the dealer I use & he recommended using a fuel system cleaner (cataclean I used £14) & that did the trick for a couple of months. One of the guys at work had a decoder & its easy to plug in. But the fault came back & I had to have the EGR valve replaced bit disappointing as I had had it replaced during the warranty period already but the blow was softened by Fiat paying for the part after an e-mail to customer services & I paid for the 2 hours labour. Hope this helps __________________ FIAT Forum Useful Links: Donate to FF | Buy FF Merchandise | Classifieds | FF Insurance | How-to Guides | FAQs 09-08-2010 #5 Derv drinker Get Your Own Title Join Date: Jun 2007 Location: southampton Posts: 164 Thanks: 0 Trader Rating: 0 Re: MJ EOBD light. Thanks for all the advice, I managed to clear it as advised but it came back with hard acceleration. Maybe due to the fact the sis in law has had the car for the past 2 months so it has been sat in the rush hour traffic to and from Southampton.
Looks like a new EGR, might just have to bite the bullet on this one. __________________ FIAT Forum Useful Links: Donate to FF | Buy FF Merchandise | Classifieds | FF Insurance | How-to Guides | FAQs 29-08-2010 #6 pandaman08 Ginger and The Panda Join Date: May 2009 Location: Ipswich Posts: 36 Thanks: 0 Trader Rating: 0 Re: MJ EOBD light. i have had this problem and still have cars in at the moment, it might be down to the clutch actuating switch, the common rail or even the turbo which i have seen as a threat on here are common to fail on the fiat mj engines correct me if im wrong __________________ FIAT Forum Useful Links: Donate to FF | Buy FF Merchandise | Classifieds | FF Insurance | How-to Guides | FAQs « Previous Thread | Next Thread » Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) Thread Tools Show Printable Version Email this Page Search this Thread Advanced Search Posting Rules You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts BB code is On Smilies are On [IMG] code is On HTML code is Off Forum Rules Forum Jump Similar Threads Thread Thread Starter Forum Replies Last Post (T) 100hp: EOBD Light On Demic Panda 6 26-02-2010 11:08 (T) Warning light... is it EOBD (I don't have the handbook!) mrmud Grande Punto 4 31-10-2009 20:13 (T) EOBD System light? I loved it but the local garage warned of expensive repairs imminent. Averaged 47 mpg, low 40’s round town in the winter, low 50’s motorway in the summer. Replaced with 1.9 MJ 105bhp, 56 reg, 3 months ago, with about 27K on the clock - now + 3K. The vehicle is very perky and responsive. It was serviced by my local, trusted, independent garage a few days after I bought it. Problem is that the MJ doesn’t get above low 40’s even on motorway runs (i.e. Northants to Devon). As far as I can see, the published mpg on MJ is no worse than JTD (48.7 mpg combined). But 70mph which was 2500rpm in JTD, is now 2850rpm in MJ. So if that is repeated across the board surely the engine must consume more fuel at higher revs so how does that relate to same/lower mpg ? I thought that maybe the engine needed ‘loosening up’ (I’m an old style motorist who can recall cars having to be ‘run-in’), as the MJ had only covered 27K over 3 years, and being based outside Inverness was unlikely to have had many high-speed runs ! So now the MJ has covered at least 1500 miles at 70’ish, and is also revved to 3500 regularly when changing up. Miller’s Diesel Power Plus has been added at 50% extra dosage to each tankful after the first two (once I realised that the mpg was low). About 5% more mpg is obtained when using BP Ultimate. The tyres are Pirelli P4 (rear) & Firestone Firehawk (front) at correct pressures. With the increasing price of fuel I estimate that the current additional consumption, on my average of 14K/year, is costing me about £300 p.a. What else can I do to improve the mpg on the MJ; or am I expecting too much (too soon) ? Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Sun 2 May 2010 13:34 FIAT Doblo - FIAT Doblo 1.9 in JTD & MJ forms – consumption - Peter.N. One of the main reasons for diesel economy is the high low speed torque allowing long gearing, if you alter that you are driving more of the time past the engines most efficient speed, so I suspect that the gearing has a lot to do with it. Once you have past the point of maximum torque the efficiency steadily drops off. I can get 50+ mpg from my Citroen XM estate which weighs about a ton and a half by keeping the revs below 2,000, the Peugeot 2.1 engine it uses will pull down to tickover speed. Home » Back Room » Technical matters View Threaded Wed 27 Feb 2008 11:12 2007 MJ: sluggish acceleration. - peanut I've recently changed from a 1.1 Active to a 1.3 Multijet (brand new). It has about 2k miles on it now. There is no way it is faster than the Active, although it should have a bit more hp, and should have a good bit more torque. I was expecting a diesely 'low down shove' with acceleration at around 2000rpm, but it is very lifeless till it gets towards 4000rpm, and even then not as good as the Active. It seems to be ticking over OK at idle. Any ideas? Is this a running in issue? What else can go wrong with a diesel? Thanks Peanut Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Wed 27 Feb 2008 11:33 2007 MJ: sluggish acceleration. - oilrag I have one of these engines in a MK2B Punto. In normal driving maximum acceleration is available at below 2,000 revs going through the gears. The only reason I would exceed this is as revs build up with road speed in top gear. It never needs above around 2,800 in top gear. The fact that you`re discussing driving it at 4,000 revs means either there is a fault with the car, which is new and under warranty, or you have not changed driving technique from petrol engines.
I`m sure its not you, but some people find it difficult to drive at low revs for max torque. It should leave the 1.1 petrol standing without exceeding 2,000 revs going through the gears. Time to get Fiat to put it on the `Examiner` and to do a test drive, I think as they will be able to determine whether it is the engine...... You should notice a decent surge as the turbo kicks in from about 2k rpm, though, so it sounds as if something isn't right there. Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Wed 27 Feb 2008 15:12 2007 MJ: sluggish acceleration. - peanut oilrag, yes that was me. I was wanting to get a second opinion.... I've been running diesels for 10 years, so am used to the driving style. Just been out for a run in it solely to observe the engine. First up, I have to keep changing gear for the hills, which points to woeful lack of torque. But more interestingly, I did a couple of tests with it in 4th gear, accelerating hard from 1000rpm. I was looking for when the turbo cut in, and the extra surge. Nothing. No extra band of acceleration at all, until it hits the revs above 3000rpm (yes, it is a diesel, it crossed my mind, too). It's just sluggish right the way from 1000 - 3000. So, how could I check whether the turbo is doing its stuff? Did they forget to fit one? I think a trip to a wonderfully helpful and skilled FIAT dealer is in order. Failing that, the one down the road. Thanks Peanut. Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Wed 27 Feb 2008 15:27 2007 MJ: sluggish acceleration. - oilrag Yes, time for a trip to Fiat. To be honest I have always found their senior techs very knowledgeable. That said, the torque is wide and not peaky, but at 1,800 revs it should be pulling like a train. I personally wouldn`t put any load on it under 1,500 revs out of respect for the main bearings.. but then, I am rather `old school` ;) Mine`s much more free running at 18,000 miles, but I don`t remember issues as you describe them when new. Can you report back when you have been to Fiat please? regards Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Wed 27 Feb 2008 15:32 2007 MJ: sluggish acceleration. - daveyjp A few years ago a colleague took delivery of a new Multipla 1.9 diesel lease car. From day one he wasn't too impressed with performance - similar to what you are experiencing - lots of revs, but no feeling of a turbo doing anything. He took it back and was fobbed of saying he needed to run it in etc etc. This went on for months, but eventually Fiat took it in and fitted a new turbo. He took it away and it didn't feel much different. One evening I was behind him at a set of lights, when he pulled off the car gave out a plume of smoke like a bus which had done 1,000,000 miles - very thick and very black. I mentioned this to him, he said he'd noticed some smoke, but assumed it was from it being a diesel. He took the car back. The car was in for weeks as the dealer liaised with Fiat in Italy. In the end the problem was diagnosed as a problem with two pieces of pipework which had been fitted incorrectly in the factory. Inlet and outlet had been mixed up meaning the turbo wasn't doing much. Once these pipes were swapped the car absolutely flew. I suggest you take a test drive in another car like yours and see if it drives differently and go from there. Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Fri 29 Feb 2008 11:23 2007 MJ: sluggish acceleration: update - peanut daveyjp, thanks, that's a good idea. I wonder how I track that down...?! Since last post, I've given the car a good thrashing (not my usual way of treating a car) and taken it to a dealer. The mechanic took me for a test drive, and he said that it 'was about right' for a Panda MJ. Apparently it has a small turbo running at low boost pressure. And yes, there is a marginal 'oomph' from about 2K, although I needed it pointing out to me. Certainly not enough to put a smile on my face, never mind going faster than anything but a entry level shopping trolley. Two things I don't understand. 1) My main car is a Fiesta 1.6TDCI, which is 90hp output, and it is a genuinely entertaining drive, with plenty of acceleration: given the weight difference between the two cars, the power/weight ratio isn't going to be all that dissimilar. 2) There is a long, straight steep hill near here. The Panda Active could hit 57mph at the top (revving like mad, but that's what it was all about). The MJ doesn't get anywhere near that. I just don't know what to make of it.... Peanut Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Fri 29 Feb 2008 13:56 2007 MJ: sluggish acceleration: update - oilrag Perhaps persuade the Dealer to let you drive another multijet Peanut? Regards Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Fri 29 Feb 2008 22:55 2007 MJ: sluggish acceleration: update - Another John H I understand that the Panda MJ is a bit "de-tuned" compared with the Punto version due to the maximum torque rating of the gearbox - in "standard" form it would presumably break the gearbox. It should still run rings around the 1108 petrol version though - I'm with oilrag: compare with another MJ Panda. Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Sat 1 Mar 2008 13:13 2007 MJ: sluggish acceleration: update - peanut AJH I wish they had! I understand that the petrol Panda100 is a real blast to drive: imagine a 90hp diesel in one: almost the same hp, and all those torques. I'll go and pester the dealer: when I bought it, they always had run out of MJ's to test drive, as they sold so easily. I will go and see what happens. Thanks Peanut Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Sat 1 Mar 2008 21:33 2007 MJ: sluggish acceleration: update - paulb {P} I understand that the petrol Panda100 is a real blast todrive Ohhhh yes :-) My mother has one and I very nearly carried out a very silly idea of chopping the Mondeo for one a few months back, such was my impression of it. Particularly amusing over 4,000 rpm. Close-ratio 6-speed gearbox is spot-on and the handling is very sharp. Downside is jiggly ride, of course, and the range isn't brilliant, especially if you use the upper part of the rev range a fair bit. Definitely sounds like the turbo isn't doing what it oughter in yours. I took ours out earlier and it pulls very well from 1,500 rpm. 107 lbs ft with low kerb weight works very well. It took until over 10k miles to run it in fully, though.
