For Some Buyers, It Could Be Just The Ticket. Steve Walker ReportsPanel vans are great when you need to shift a hefty cargo but with the majority of the vehicle given over to a metallic load box, passenger accommodation is less of a strongpoint. Assuming youre not returning from the continent with a half-a-dozen illegal immigrants intent on bypassing HM Customs, in which case a few man-sized cardboard boxes in the back will suffice, panel vans can only really carry two persons in comfort. If you want to accommodate more, youll need something like Fiats Ducato Combi.Most panel vans claim to offer three front berths with the driver in the drivers seat and two passengers sharing the bench alongside. Space really is at a premium with this layout, however, especially for the poor fool perched in the middle whose comfort is inversely proportionate to the dimensions of his travelling companions. If you regularly carry three or more people in your commercial vehicle, a good solution is a model like the Ducato Combi, basically a panel van with an extra row of seats behind the driver and front passengers. You can specify yet more seating up to a capacity of nine if you want but at some point, your Combi is going to become a minibus and therell be no room left for your cargo. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value Six seats seems a sensible balance between cargo and colleagues but theres a multitude of different interior configurations producing load volumes ranging from 1.8m3 to 10m3. If you specify them, the middle and rear rows of seats can be folded down, double folded or removed completely to increase the size of the cargo area. Fairly obviously, the Fiat Ducato Combi is derived from the Ducato van but there are some key differences other than the inclusion of extra seating. For a start, there are windows running down the vehicles flanks. Theres also interior lighting and a bulkhead can be specified to separate you passengers from your cargo. Only one engine is offered with the Ducato Combi and its a 2.3-litre JTD powerplant, producing 110bhp at 3600 revs. Fiats JTD gives impressive power in an accessible rev range to outperform most equivalent units in rival models, so it could serve as the Ducatos ace in the hole."You can specify yet more seating up to a capacity of nine"From a drivers point of view, the Ducato gives a comfortable ride and Fiat have taken extensive steps towards reducing noise levels. Theres widespread soundproofing in the cab designed to cut road and engine racket but dont expect too much. You are, after all, piloting a large metallic box and a fair amount of echoing background sound is to be expected especially if the load bay is unoccupied. The Ducatos hydraulic clutch system works well to curtail vibrations that can be felt through the pedal and the steering is power assisted - light enough to aid complex manoeuvres but still stable at higher speeds. The driver gets to park him or herself on an ergonomically moulded, foam padded seat thats adjustable enough to accommodate all but the most outlandishly proportioned users. Fiat have uprated the air distribution around the current Ducato; this means faster demisting of windows and more efficient heating on those bitter winter mornings. The standard heating system can also be supplemented by a choice of independent, stand-alone units, so chilly occupants dont have to rely on the engine for warmth. Buyers get a drivers airbag as standard but will have to reach into their pockets to secure the passenger and side equivalents. Head-restraints are also standard specification. The same front wheel drive layout is replicated across the Ducato range and after the engine brings you up to speed, Fiat have included a few hi-tec methods to stop you again safely. ABS brakes are undoubtedly a life saver and it would have been nice to see them included in the sticker price. As it is, they cost extra but the system includes Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and customers can also specify ASR - a gadget that reduces torque delivery or applies the brakes as required, if the front wheels begin to slip. Choice isnt going to be a problem for Ducato Combi buyers. Theres an options list as long as your arm so, if youre willing to pay for it, you can tailor a model to your precise needs. Fiats Connect system is well worth considering is you have the requisite cash. It incorporates satellite navigation, GSM mobile phone, voice recognition and a CD stereo in to one handy console. Aside from this theres the option of rear parking sensors or even a rear camera so you can see whats behind you before you reverse into it. The Fiat Ducato Combi and its ilk neatly address the dilemma between people and cargo that panel van users often face. Steve Ghosley ReportsWith the Scudo van, Fiat saw the perfect platform for a combination vehicle providing both load carrying and people moving capabilities. Designers are constantly wrestling with the problem of fitting people and their attendant luggage in a fixed space. The inevitable compromise usually means that one or other loses out, but in the Scudo Combi, both people and luggage get equal billing. Its not surprising therefore, that so many of these vehicles are employed in the minicab trade where trips to the airport are frequently requested. Throughout its life, the Scudo, along with the Citroen Dispatch and Peugeot Expert models that share its design, has always occupied a curious niche within the commercial vehicle markets overall structure. It sits snugly between the compact vans (think Vauxhall Combo and Citroen Berlingo) and the small panel vans (think Volkswagen Transporter and Mercedes Vito), apparently sharing characteristics with both. This halfway-house positioning has long been a Scudo strongpoint. Drivers favouring the compact size and car-like handling of smaller vans but needing the capacity of a panel van would find a capable companion in the Scudo. It can be configured to carry five or six passengers in comfort. In addition, the load carrying space can be up to 459kg including the driver. The Combi can be specified with fully glazed or partly glazed bodywork and with such flexibility available, the vehicle can be moulded to the buyers exact requirements. On either the five or six seater Combi, all seats feature multi-adjustment, special padding, three-point seat belts and adjustable head restraints that are removable from the rear seats for improved visibility in the absence of passengers. On viewing the vehicle from the rear or even the side, most people would agree that the basic shape has changed little over the years. From the front though, its a different story. There is a deeper bumper and large clear lens headlights either side of a chunky lattice work grille with the Fiat badge at its heart. There are changes to the other aspects too, even if you dont immediately spot them. Thick side rubbing strips are now present to protect against parking knocks and the thin end of the original Scudos trademark wedge-shaped profile has been blunted somewhat."The Scudo Combi is simply a Scudo van with extra seats"Inside, on the surface, you could be in the old model Scudo. The triangular flip-top ashtray in the centre console is a nice touch for the smokers out there, the dash-mounted gear stick is well located, there are good deep door pockets and the drivers seat positions you low to the ground while retaining good all round visibility. On the downside, the lever controls on the ventilation system do betray the vans age. Not instantly obvious to the layman hopping aboard a Scudo are the reshaped seats and a steering wheel, which can now accommodate remote controls for the standard CD stereo. The Fiat Scudo Combi is a good choice for the taxi driver or large family who need the space afforded by its generous size but would rather not have the hassle of manoeuvring and parking a big vehicle on a daily basis. Behind the wheel of a Scudo Combi, the driving experience is more compact MPV than light commercial vehicle. There is some body roll through the twisty bits but thats par for the course on a high-sided vehicle like this and otherwise the van feels stable and responsive. The soundproofing and vibration reduction were given attention in this current version and it shows with far less of the rumble and roar finding its way inside. The perched driving position and flat-mounted steering wheel that characterises larger panel vans is noticeably absent and the whole vehicle feels more compact probably because it is. In the engine bay, the Scudo is strong. Two basic engine choices are offered, the entry-level 1.9D and the 2. 0-litre JTD 8-valve Unijet diesel. The former is very much a budget option with the latter equalling or eclipsing it in every important area. If youve got the money, the JTD box is the one to tick but Scudo buyers with one eye on the balance sheet will be presented with something of a selection headache. The 1. 9D puts out a modest 69bhp compared to the 109bhp emanating from the JTD. The lesser engine manages 92lb/ft of torque at 2,500rpm, a figure that the JTD destroys with its 184lb/ft at 1,750rpm. The 1.9-litres top speed is a pedestrian 86mph but youll get 103mph from the JTD. At first glance theres no contest but at second glance, while the 1.9D may be noisier, dirtier and slower, its also cheaper to the tune of £1,400 and that bottom line may be all that some buyers want to see. Its a case of each to his own but the JTD makes a compelling case for itself. Standard equipment on the Scudo runs to power steering, a height adjustable drivers seat, seatbelt pretensioners and an immobiliser. ABS and airbags are options on the JTD models that most buyers will want to take up, so consider this when comparing the Scudo to competitors on price. Theres a 3-year Fiat Vanguard dealer warranty, a 3-year paintwork warranty and 8-years of anti-perforation cover with all Scudos - something which is indicative of Fiats confidence in the quality of their product. The Scudo Combi has created a nice little niche for itself as a genuine, flexible workhorse that can turn itself to any number of roles and do them well. It may not be the prettiest available, but then workhorses were never bred for their looks.
