This is my first post and I have a qestion for fellow 1.3 Diesel owners. I bought my car in March 2008. I have done 8,000 miles and the car has had 4 oil changes!! I have been told this is due to the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). I wasn't advised of this when I bought the car and for a newly designed car this seems to be a pretty big failure. The oil changes are £90 a time and negates any saving that could be made by buying diesel against petrol. No problems so far with oil & mileage but I'm worried about your issue....I'll be interested to see if anyone else has this particular problem. A brand new car & a diesel at that were supposed to cut down my annual travelling/car costs, not increase them. Am currently updating the software, but no joy so far, any suggestions? I'm new to forums but my car troubles have driven me to it. I have a brand new 1.3 M-JET sport which I purchased in August 08 at full retail price. So far it has been back to Palmers of Watford for the following:- Air con leak in Sept 08, engine oil warning light came on in Jan 09, they changed the oil and filter for the DPF FOC, April 09 the air con was leaking again so they replaced 2 pipes and I had a problem with the clutch. They replaced the clutch FOC. Aug 09 the car went in to have its first service at 9988 miles and the engine oil warning light had come on again. They serviced the car and charged me to change the oil and filter. They told me I should be taking the car on longer journey's as all my driving was city driving (thought the fiat 500 was supposed to be a city car) and I wasn't giving the car enough time to clear the DPF. I complained to the salesman who sold me the car and he informed me they now only advise people who do city driving to purchase the petrol version for this reason. Oct 09 the problem with the clutch started again. Palmers had the car in and I asked them to check the brakes as the brake peddel wobbled when braking. The called me the next day to inform me they couldn't fix the clutch and neither could Fiat. Its a known problem on the right hand drive diesels and they have no fix for it. They said they had no idea as to when they could fix it and it was "only a noise" and safe to drive, if it was only a noise why did they replace the clutch last time. They also didn't fix the brakes and asked me to collect the car as it was safe to drive. Tuesday last week I called Fiat on 00800 34280000 and was told someone would call back within 24 hours well its a week later and I have yet to receive a call. Fiat has a lot of respect for its customers don't you think. But hay its only a noise. Anyone else experiencing these problems should take a look at www.bbc.co.uk/theoneshow Dom Littlewood has a template letter there you can download and send to your place of purchase asking for a full refund under the Sale of Goods Act as the car isn't fit for purpose or of satisfactory quality. If you too are experiencing the level of problems with you car let me know. I originally emailed Honest John on the Daily Telegraph's motoring section about my car's problems and he was the first person to tell me about this recurring problem with the DPF. Kind regards Fiat Marketing I have contacted Fiat many times about the clutch noise problem which was apparent on my car from day 1. They advised me to take it into my dealers to investigate but all they could say was that it was a known problem and that Fiat in Turin were working on a solution. I was told that my case was on file and that as soon as the solution was found I would be contacted and booked in to get it fixed. That was 15 months ago but still no news. The problem is caused by a vibration in the clutch hydraulics due to the extra length of the line from master cylinder to slave cylinder, a result of the conversion from LHD to RHD. A friend of mine has had his fixed by adding a fluid damper from a another Fiat (Panda I think) to the hydraulic line and the vibration and noise were eliminated completely. I asked Fiat if I could have the same modification but was told that as the part had not been homologated for the 500 they were not able to carry this out and were working on adding one as standard to the 500 1.3 MJT in production and that when this was done my car would be recalled for the modification. To be honest, although it is a little annoying, there is no actual mechanical wear taking place so that reliability/longevity should not be compromised. I have had nothing but good service from Fiat CS and they have excelled in trying to get my dealer to sort out my many DPF problems so I will wait patiently in the hope that I will get the call one day soon. phil Joined: 12-07-2007 Posts: 1,418 Location: jockland Posted: 27-10-2009, 7:57 PM Re: 500 1.3 Multi Jet Lounge Diesel hi...was thinking ...you say a friend had a modification carried out ..was that also on a 500 ???? if so if it isn't homologated ,who carried it out ???.. is it a diesel you own ??? if so has anyone actually remove dthe gearbox and checked the dual mass flywheel ??? which is fitted to most diesels ,though i do not know it the 500 has it ..but worth asking ...also if there is a general issue ,it does not take 15 months to implement a modification...i think someone is feeding you ..ehh rubbish ..if your pedal is vibrating when depressed .it sounds like a clutch issue where the release bearing is pushing back against the hydraulics...had an issue like that on the trucks i work on ,and for the life of me i can't remember the cure ...lol phil Topo's mum Joined: 27-09-2009 Posts: 8 Posted: 27-10-2009, 11:19 PM Re: 500 1.3 Multi Jet Lounge Diesel Hi FM I think the reason that people who are having problems get frustrated is that some of the dealers don't seem to have any clue about what's gone wrong and are only concerned about getting the repair sanctioned by Fiat warranty. While this is happening the customer is pretty much kept in the dark. Also, when I had the original problem with my car the people in Fiat customer services frankly didn't seem that bothered. When you pay a substantial amount of money for a new car you want something that works well and feel that you are entitled to some kind of after care and service.
